The Periyar Lake is an enchanting part of the Periyar forest, and the boat safari is a unique experience here. Floating quietly on the water of the Periyar Lake, surrounded by dense forest and distant hills, feels very different from a conventional jeep safari. The boat safari is undoubtedly a fascinating experience that you must have at Periyar National Park. The boat safari is strictly regulated by the forest department in Peiryar. They are carried out in multiple slots throughout the day, right from early morning to evening.
Boat Safari Slots in Periyar National Park
The standard duration of the Periyar boat safari is around 1.5 hours (90 minutes). The timings are fixed and apply to almost all safari slots during the day. Whether you choose an early morning ride or a later one, the duration usually remains the same.

There are multiple safari slots available, across the day - morning, mid-day, and afternoon. Each slot is designed to give visitors a chance to experience the lake under different natural conditions.
As already mentioned, the entire system is monitored and controlled by the forest department. From boarding to returning, everything runs on a schedule. You must reach the Aanavachal parking area at least 1 hour prior to the scheduled safari. The parking area is approximately 4 km away from the Boat Landing Area. You need to board a bus from Periyar Tiger Reserve to reach the boat landing area from the Aanavachal parking area.

During this 90-minute boat ride, you are not rushing from one spot to another. Instead, the boat moves slowly, allowing you to watch the shoreline, trees, and open areas peacefully. The Periyar boat safari is a blissful experience. This slow pace is actually what makes the safari special. You may spot herds of deer grazing near the water, wild boars moving through the forest edges, or even elephants walking down to the lake. Birdlife is also very active here, so keep an eye out for different species perched on tree trunks or flying above the water.
Periyar boat safari booking is the most important part of the planning. Although there are 5 slots available, the tickets might get sold out during the peak tourist season.
